Be not afraid my fellow Game of Thrones fans: the chances of getting a GOT spinoff just got 4X’ed! As the debut of the long-awaited seventh season draws closer, the execs over at HBO put our worries to rest on Thursday and announced that the studio has teamed up with four seasoned Hollywood writers to take a crack at expanding the Game of Thrones universe beyond the world created by George R.R. Martin. Writers Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Carly Wray (Mad Men) Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), and Jane Goldman (Kingsman,X-Men: First Class), will all make a run at coming up with different spinoff ideas, along side creator George R.R. Martin who will be working directly with both Goldman and Wray. Martin and Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff will be executive producers if any of the concepts created look promising.
HBO is keeping a tight lid on all details for each individual project, revealing that they will “explore different time periods of Martin’s vast and rich universe,” but A Song Of Fire And Ice creator Martin claims to be in possession of “thousands” of pages on the history of Westeros. The show already has a lot of characters whose fates and backstories are unknown and ready to be dramatized. It’s unknown how many of the projects will actually making it to production, but with four great writers putting pen to paper, one idea should be bound to stick!
