Josh McDermitt, the actor who plays Eugene on the hit show The Walking Dead, quit social media because of a barrage of death threats.
McDermitt told fans and cyberbullies not mix up his real life identity with the character he plays on television.
McDermitt returned to The Walking Dead for Season 7. The character he plays, Eugene, changed significantly and some fans were displeased.
The 38-year-old actor filmed an emotional Facebook Live video explaining why he was quitting all his social media accounts.
In the video the actor told viewers, “Don’t send me death threats … I’m just sick of it. You can hate Eugene, I don’t care. You can think whatever you want, but when you start saying you hope I die, I don’t know if you’re talking about Josh or Eugene.”
He pleaded with fans to “stop complaining about everything on the Internet. Just go spend time with your family or friends or loved ones. Just get off the internet.”
Many fans came to the defense of McDermitt.
“You can see in his eyes he’s so tired and hurt,” a fan tweeted.
A different wrote, “Agreed. I found Eugene’s storyline compelling & wanted to see how it played out. I hope Josh doesn’t ask to be written off over this mess.”
McDermitt deleted all of his profiles from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
